Big Steel/Little Steel, 2006

16 minutes

In Big Steel/Little Steel, the tension between Talya Baharals refined skill as a jeweler and her impulse to combine metal with paper pulp to produce rusting, intuitive sculpture is inspired by found remnants of Steel town. An upstate New York metals artist, Talya approaches sculpture with a sense of adventure and experimentation during a month-long residency at Society for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh, PA. The video highlights the creative process as she works through the abyss of the beginning/unknown and begins to define her issues, working with high school and adults in workshops, sharing her process and producing elegant, powerful work for an exhibition before she leaves.
