Oyez (pay attention!), 2022

paper cut, canvas, pencil

Wanting to honor Ruth Bader Ginsberg, loving her dissent collars, and troubled by the politicization of the Supreme Court, I set out to make a giant dissent collar out of something. Anything. Using wabi sabi principles of materials at hand, I liked cutting paper. But it wasn’t till I came upon the realization that “oyez,” the way the Supreme Court is called to order actually means…pay attention! That the idea started to hold water. The background on which it floats contains an RBG quoted phrase, “all the democracy money can buy.” The lines mimicking the first stages of learning to print felt right.
