Old worn farm tools incised with aerobic exhortations such as “squeeze those buns” are thrown down into the dirt that reflects back a hypnotic, slow-motion compilation of exercise tapes and droning soundtrack. Floor to ceiling, larger than life, wall paintings of human nervous systems float as sentries in the corners. The alternately humorous, bewildering, and frustrating changes in the relationship between everyday life and our physical bodies deserve more attention than the latest fad diet. Though the necessities of life used to supply an activity level sufficient for a healthy lifestyle, many of us now need to treat our bodies like pets….taking them out for exercise. What are the implications for our evolving relationship with the physical world?
